A Dynamic Decision Support System for Farm Water Management in Surface Irrigation: Model Development and Application Chilean J. Agric. Res.
Flores,Carlos I.; Holzapfel,Eduardo A.; Lagos,Octavio.
An online dynamic decision support system (DDSS) was developed, to support the farm water management in surface irrigation. The online DDSS was based on the formulation and integration of three components: a dynamic-relational data base, an administrator model, and a graphical user interface. The DDSS allows routines of actualization, edition and addition of online data, providing information in real time. The online DDSS was applied in an orange orchard (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) cv. Valencia Late under furrow irrigation. The results pointed out that the time irrigation cutoff was the main significant management factor, to decrease the hazard of leaching, superficial runoff and percolation. Applying the results obtained with the DDSS, furrow irrigation...

Aggregate tensile strength and friability characteristics of furrow and sprinkler irrigated fields in Southern Idaho NWISRL
Koehn, A.C.; Lehrsch, G.A.; Busscher, W.J.; Evans, D.E.; King, B.A.; Stieneke, D.L.; Sojka, R.E..
Agricultural crops grown in southern Idaho are furrow or sprinkler irrigated. Therefore, the soil experiences several wetting and drying cycles each growing season that can contribute to changes in aggregate tensile strength and friability. The objective of the research was to evaluate the influence of irrigation on soil structural properties. Four furrow irrigated fields were sampled at the top and bottom of the field, in the furrow and on the bed location of the furrow. Five sprinkler irrigated fields were sampled at 0-5 and 5-15 cm depth and at the top and bottom of the field. Results from this study indicate that differences in tensile strength in furrow irrigated fields were only evident soon after irrigation; otherwise, there were few differences in...

Conservation practice effectiveness in the irrigated Upper Snake/Rock Creek watershed NWISRL
Bjorneberg, D.L.; Westermann, D.T.; Nelson, N.O.; Kendrick, J.H..
The Upper Snake River/Rock Creek Conservation Effects Assessment Project was initiated in 2005 to determine the effectiveness of conservation practices in an irrigated watershed. Our objectives were to determine water and salt balances and water quality effects of using sprinkler rather than furrow irrigation in the Twin Falls irrigation tract in southern Idaho. Data from the current study were compared with earlier studies conducted from 1968 to 1971. Irrigation water diverted from the Snake River supplied 73% and 83% of the hydrologic input to this 82,000 ha (202,000 ac) watershed in 2005 and 2006, respectively, with approximately 40% flowing back to the Snake River through furrow irrigation runoff, unused irrigation water, and subsurface drainage. Net...

Espaçamento e densidade para o cultivo do arroz de sequeiro na microrregião Alto Purus-Acre. II. Plantio em sulco. Infoteca-e
CAMPOS, I. S.; MEDEIROS, J. A..
Apesar...

Estimation of furrow irrigation sediment loss using an artificial neural network NWISRL
King, B.A.; Bjorneberg, D.L.; Trout, T.J.; Mateos, L; Araujo, D. F.; Costa, R. N..
The area irrigated by furrow irrigation in the U.S. has been steadily decreasing but still represents about 20% of the total irrigated area in the U.S. Furrow irrigation sediment loss is a major water quality issue and a method for estimating sediment loss is needed to quantify the environmental impacts and estimate effectiveness and economic value of conservation practices. Artificial neural network (NN) modeling was applied to furrow irrigation to predict sediment loss as a function of hydraulic and soil conditions. A data set consisting of 1926 furrow evaluations spanning three continents and a wide range of hydraulic and soil conditions was used to train and test a multilayer perceptron feed forward NN model. The final NN model consisted of 16 inputs,...

Isotopic composition of maize as related to N-fertilization and irrigation in the Mediterranean region Scientia Agricola
Lasa,Berta; Irañeta,Iosu; Muro,Julio; Irigoyen,Ignacio; Aparicio Tejo,Pedro María.
Nitrate leaching as a result of excessive application of N-fertilizers and water use is a major problem of vulnerable regions. The farming of maize requires high N fertilization and water inputs in Spain. Isotopic techniques may provide information on the processes involved in the N and C cycles in farmed areas. The aim of this work was studying the impact of sprinkler and furrow irrigation and N input on maize (Zea mays L.) yields, and whether isotopic composition can be used as indicator of best farming practices. Trials were set up in Tudela (Spain) with three rates of N fertilization (0, 240 and 320 kg urea-N ha-1) and two irrigation systems (furrow and sprinkler). Yield, nitrogen content, irrigation parameters, N fate and C and N isotope composition...

Managing Runoff Water Quality From Recently Manured, Furrow Irrigated Fields NWISRL
Lentz, R.D.; Westermann, D.T..
Nutrient losses in furrow irrigation runoff potentially increase when soils are amended with manure. We evaluated the effect of tillage, water soluble polyacrylamide (WSPAM) and irrigation management on runoff water quality during the first furrow irrigation on a calcareous silt loam soil, which had received 45 Mg/ha (dry wt.) dairy manure applied in the fall. In Exp. 1 the amended soil was rototilled and irrigated that fall; furrow inflows were either treated with 10 mg/L WSPAM injected into furrow inflows only during furrow advance (Fall-WSPAM), or were untreated (Fall-Control). In Exp. 2 the first irrigation on the amended soil was delayed until the following spring and treatments included rototilled WSPAM (Spring-WSPAM) and untreated rototilled...

Reducing nutrient losses in runoff from furrow irrigation NWISRL
Lentz, R.D.; Westermann, D.T.; Lehrsch, G.A..
Few studies have comprehensively examined nutrient losses in runoff from furrow-irrigated fields, but the rising cost of fertilizer and finite nature of the resource encourages further research. A 2-yr experiment measured runoff losses of sediment, particulate P and N, and dissolved NO3-N, NH4-N, K, and reactive P (DRP) from fertilized, manured, or non-amended fields. Average nutrient losses were substantial, including 15.6 lbs ac/yr dissolved N, P, and K and 73.6 lbs ac/yr particulate N and P. The cost or replacing these nutrients with inorganic fertilizers was not trivial, at $54.69 ac/yr. Relative to non-amended soil, manure increased dissolved K, NO3-N, and DRP in runoff by 2.1x, 1.5x, and 2.7x, respectively. Other experiments evaluated the...

Soil phosphorus availability differences between sprinkler and furrow irrigation NWISRL
Ippolito, J.A.; Bjorneberg, D.L..
Water flowing in irrigation furrows detaches and transports soil particles and subsequently nutrients such as phosphorus. To reduce the risk of erosion and offsite phosphorus transport, producers in south-central Idaho have been converting from furrow to sprinkler irrigation. We completed research on soil phosphorus dynamics in furrow versus sprinkler irrigated soils from four paired-fields in the region. Surface soils (0-2.5 inches) were obtained from fields in September following barley harvest. Furrow irrigated soils contained 38 parts per million of plant-available phosphorus (i.e. Olsen-extractable), on average, as compared to 20 parts per million under sprinkler irrigation. These results are important as 20 parts per million extractable...

The Current State of Predicting Furrow Irrigation Erosion NWISRL
Bjorneberg, D.L.; Strelkoff, T.; Clemmens, A.J.; Lee, J.H..
There continues to be a need to predict furrow irrigation erosion to estimate on- and off-site impacts of irrigation management. The objective of this paper is to review the current state of furrow erosion prediction technology considering four models: SISL, WEPP, WinSRFR and APEX. SISL is an empirical model for predicting annual soil loss from furrow irrigated fields. SISL could potentially be a useful model if a new method was developed to calculate base soil loss for areas other than southern Idaho where it was developed. The WEPP model uses physically-based equations to predict erosion in irrigation furrows, which are assumed to be the same as rills. Primary difficulties with the WEPP model are defining erodibility parameters for furrow irrigation and...

Water-yield relationships of potato under different irrigation methods and regimens Scientia Agricola
Erdem,Tolga; Erdem,Yesim; Orta,Halim; Okursoy,Hakan.
Yield response to irrigation of different crops is of major importance in production planning where water resources are limited. This study aims to determine the effect of different irrigation methods and irrigation regimens on potato yield in the Trakya Region, Turkey, during 2003 and 2005. Potato was grown under furrow and drip irrigation methods and three regimens: irrigation applied when 30, 50, or 70% of the available water was consumed. The seasonal potato evapotranspiration ranged on 501 to 683 mm in 2003, and 464 to 647 mm in 2005. The furrow and drip irrigation methods had no significant effect on tuber yield for both years. Irrigation regimens influenced tuber yield (P < 0.05) in 2005, and the highest tuber yield was registered for 30%...
